Also known as Black Kingfish, Lemonfish and Black Salmon
The Cobia is the only known member of its particular family. They have the appearance of a small shark - especially when caught and being brought to the boat. Cobias often swim alongside ocean giants - Whale Sharks, Manta Rays and even Whales. They are sometimes encountered in large schools but more often they swim in small groups.
Cobias are extremely tough fighters and will give a good account for themselves - even when hooked on medium/heavy tackle. They display a fast initial run and follow it up with dogged reluctance to come to the boat.
Phuket specimens can reach 80lbs or more but the IGFA World record currently stands at 135lbs.
Although not known for their eating quality, Cobias are popular in Thailand as the main ingredient for fish curry.
