Phuket at a glance:

Phuket has long been accepted as one of the most popular exotic holiday destinations in the world. This stunningly beautiful tropical island hideaway offers so much more than clear, blue sea and white sand beaches peppered with coconut trees. Phuket has a sophisticated infrastructure and offers some of the most spectacular hotels in the world. Visitors are treated to outstanding hospitality from the charming, considerate Thai people, who appear to never stop smiling.

Geography:
Phuket is situated in the Andaman Sea, 8-degrees north of the equator and joined to the Thai mainland by a road bridge. It is The largest island in Thailand and the Kingdom's only island province. The island has a resident population of about 200,000 inhabitants. The waters surrounding Phuket and its neighboring provinces, Phang Nga and Krabi, are dotted with hundreds of small islands and islets, many of which are uninhabited. Phuket's most popular "tourist" beaches are on the west coast of the island.

Climate:
Phuket is warm and humid, but pleasant all year round with gentle onshore breezes cooling the island for much of the year. Phuket has 2 main seasons; the "rainy season" from May to November, when the prevailing winds are from the south west and the "dry season " from December to April - when the winds come from the north east. It must be said that it does not rain every day during the rainy season, in fact, it often stays dry and sunny throughout the day with showers during the night. March and April are the hottest months and December and January the coolest.

Religion:
The vast majority of locals are Thai Buddhists. Others are Muslims, Sikhs and Christians. A small group called “Chaolay” or “Sea Gypsies” have their own religious beliefs.

Activities and attractions:
There are numerous interesting and exciting activities on offer for visitors to Phuket.

Outdoor sporting possibilities include: Big Game fishing - Scuba diving - Sailing - Golfing - Parasailing - Jet Skis - Wakeboarding/water skiing - Sea Canoeing - White water rafting - wind surfing - Rock climbing - ATV - Pistol and Rifle Shooting - Paint Ball war games and Bungy jumping.

After dark activities and entertainment:

Phuket is blessed with literally hundreds of superb eateries specializing in genuine Thai delicacies. How can anyone resist a spectacular restaurant in a stunning waterfront setting and serving a vast array of fresh seafood direct from the Andaman Sea?
For non believers, there are numerous alternatives for less adventurous diners. Visitors can find food from every corner of the globe. Italian restaurants abound on the island, as well as Chinese, Western Steak Houses, Middle Eastern, Russian and even good old fish 'n' chips!

Nightowls will be delighted with Phuket's nocturnal attractions. Phuket offers a truly spectacular cultural show (Phuket Fantasea) worthy of any established tourist venue in the world.

For those who require significant quantities of liquid refreshment, there is certainly no shortage of bars and pubs; many offering live music, performed by talented musicians. Discos and lively nightclubs are to be found along Phuket's vibrant Patong Beach.
